The oldest set of rules published for a football-like game are found in Discorso Sopra del Giuoco Calcio Fiorentino, written by Italian polymath Giovanni de' Bardi in 1580. The book discusses the game known as Calcio Fiorentino, which is still played in the Italian city of Florence to this day, and opens with a numbered list of 33 basic rules governing the organization of teams, layout of pitches and conduct of the game itself.
