In eight One-Day Internationals (ODI), five Test matches and two T20 Internationals (T20I) played between 31 January and 31 July 2025, India contrived to lose 15 coin-tosses in succession. The unlucky captains were Rohit Sharma (for all eight ODIs), Shubman Gill (for all five Tests) and Suryakumar Yadav (for both T20Is). Ten of the matches were against England, including all three fixtures in the home ODI series in February, and all five games in the Test series in England in June-August. Despite the setbacks, India won 12 of the 15 matches they played during this sequence.
India’s fortune finally changed on 10 September 2025, when skipper Yadav won the toss at the start of their T20 Asia Cup match against the United Arab Emirates in Dubai. The team’s miserable run of lost tosses in ODIs, however, was destined to stretch to a record 20 matches – from the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final against Australia in Ahmedabad, India, on 19 November, all the way to the second match of their ODI series against South Africa in Raipur, India, on 3 December 2025. Once again it was Rohit (12 matches) on the receiving end, ably supported by KL Rahul (five matches) and Gill (three matches). ESPNcricinfo calculated that the probability of losing 15 consecutive coin tosses is 0.003%. Put another way, the odds of it happening are 1 in 32,768.
