No men’s or women’s Test team has scored more runs in a single day’s play than the 525 for 4 posted by India Women on the first day of their one-off Test match against South Africa Women at MA Chidambaram Stadium (Chepauk Stadium) in Chennai, India, on 28 June 2024.

Openers Shafali Verma (205) and Smriti Mandhana (149) laid the foundations with a first-wicket partnership of 292, and contributions from Shubha Satheesh (15), Jemimah Rodrigues (55), captain Harmanpreet Kaur (42 not out) and Richa Ghosh (43 not out) supplied the middle-order momentum that guided India to 525 for 4 at stumps, scoring at 5.35 runs per over from the 98 overs bowled.

Sri Lanka’s 509 for 9 on day two of the men’s Test match against Bangladesh in Colombo on 22 July 2002 – advancing from 32 without loss in seven overs to 541 for 9 declared in 111 overs at stumps – had been the most runs scored in a Test match day. By comparison, that’s 16 fewer runs in six more overs than India Women’s effort in Chennai on 28 June 2024.
