Martina Navratilova (USA, b. Czechoslovakia) and Chris Evert (USA) met 22 times in Grand Slam singles competition between 1975 and 1988, with Navratilova leading the head-to-head with 14 wins to Evert’s eight. In finals, Navratilova has a 10-4 advantage, winning all five of the Wimbledon match-ups (1978–79, 1982 and 1984–85), both of the US Open finals they contested (1983–84), and two of the three finals at the Australian Open (1981 and 1985). Evert comes out on top at the French Open, where she beat Navratilova in three finals (1975 and 1985–86) and lost just once (1984).

Navratilova vs. Evert was the most prolific tennis rivalry of the open era (since era) and ran to 80 meetings on the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour between 1973 and 1988, with 43 wins for Navratilova and 37 for Evert. A remarkable 60 of those clashes were finals, with Navratilova once again in front with 36 championship-match wins to Evert’s 24. In all Grand Slam matches (22), Navratilova leads the head-to-head 14-8.

Navratilova won 18 major singles titles in 1978–90; Evert’s pro tennis record also includes 18 majors, in 1974–86.

The pair are ranked joint fifth on the all-time list of women with the most Grand Slam singles titles, behind Margaret Court (24), Serena Williams (23), Steffi Graf (22) and Helen Wills Moody (19). Both would have won many more Grand Slams had it not been for the intense rivalry they shared for the best part of two decades.
