The fastest female relay swim between Robben Island and Dassen Island in Western Cape, South Africa, is 18 hours 3 minutes 19 seconds, achieved by Shoneé Cornelissen, Eva Dirksen, Katherine Persson (all South Africa) and Georgina Smith (UK) on 6 March 2024. The attempt was piloted by Derrick Frazer of Big Bay Events and the record was verified by the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association.
Covering a distance of 52.5 km (28.3 nautical miles), this was a first-of-its-kind swim route that had never previously been attempted.
The swim began at around 1.30 a.m., with the first few hours completed in total darkness. As per standard practice for open-water swimming records, only swimsuits, caps and goggles were worn and, as a relay, the women rotated turns swimming hourly.
