A 58-year-old woman from Shizuoka, Japan was admitted to Isogaki Gastro-Entero-Surgical clinic in May 1990. She complained of severe gastric pain and nausea brought on by eating sashimi (sliced raw fish). Fifty-six white, thread-like worms were discovered in her stomach and thereby removed during a 90-minute operation. The worms were later identified as the larvae of Anisakis simplex and measured up to 17.27 mm (0.67 in) in length. Information derived from a medical case written up by Dr.Noboru Kagei and Hiroshi Isogaki in the International Journal for Parasitology Vol 22, No 2, 1992.

The patient is to remain unnamed.
