A rare one cent coin, a 1943 copper penny owned by Steve Benson of Fullerton, California, was sold for $112,500 (£69,884) on 23 December 1999.
The coin was one of only 19 minted by mistake from copper in 1943. That year the U.S government did not allow pennies to be minted from copper as it was needed for the war effort. A billion zinc-coated steel pennies were issued instead. However, copper blanks were used from the year before by mistake, resulting in 19 coins being minted in the government mints: 12 in Philadelphia, 6 in San Francisco and one in Denver. The government switched back to making Lincoln cents in 1944.
