Rhodium, a metal of the same family as platinum and palladium, is the world's most expensive industrial metal. As per March 2000, the market price of a single ounce was U$1,750 (£1,113).
The metal is used mainly in exhaust catalysts in the automotive industry, but also has applications in chemical and specialised glass industries. About 80% of the supplies come from South Africa, while Russia accounts for 15% and the USA, 5%.
