The Indian Army, as a part of their contribution to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of India's Independence, organized a hospital train that provided specialized medical treatment to retired personnel of the Indian Army Forces in 11 Indian states. The train parted from New Delhi on 15 Aug 1997 and returned to New Delhi 5 months later on 13 Jan 1998. The train was named DHANWANTRI. Free medical treatment was provided to more than 32,000 retired servicemen. The train stopped at over 24 remote station and traveled a total distance of 10,000 km.
