In the final of the ICC Women's World Cup at Lord's, UK, on 23 July 2017, England's Anya Shrubsole took six wickets for 46 runs against India, finishing the match with a devastating spell of five wickets in 19 balls. No other player – male or female – has taken as many wickets in a World Cup final, and Shrubsole returned the second-best bowling figures by a woman in the history of international limited-overs finals.

England's Nicky Shaw held the record for the most wickets taken in a Women's World Cup final before Shrubsole, with four wickets for 34 runs against New Zealand at Australia's North Sydney Oval on 22 March 2009.

Four men have taken seven wickets in a World Cup match since 1975 (led by Australian Glenn McGrath's seven wickets for 15 runs against Namibia at Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, South Africa, on 27 February 2003) and eight men have six wickets to their name, but none of these hauls were achieved in a World Cup final.

Shrubsole's match-winning spell of five wickets in 19 balls started with the key wicket of Indian opener Punam Raut (86). England won the match by nine runs to claim their fourth ICC World Cup title (1973, 1993, 2009, 2017).

Shrubsole's final bowling analysis was 9.4 overs, 0 maidens, 46 runs, 6 wickets. She also effected a run-out in the 48th over (India's eighth wicket) before taking the final two wickets in the next over.

In 2017, Shrubsole was the first female cricketer to receive the Christopher Martin-Jenkins Spirit of Cricket Award, and she was shortlisted for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year alongside the likes of Mo Farah (athletics), Lewis Hamilton (F1), Harry Kane (soccer) and Johanna Konta (tennis).
