The most wins of the World Puzzle Championships by an individual is 11 by Ulrich Voigt (Germany), who took the gold medal in 2000–01, 2003, 2005–06, 2008–09 and 2012–14 and 2016. His last win was in Senec, Slovakia, UK, on 23 October 2016 at the 25th annual championships.
The World Puzzle Championships was created in 1992 by Will Shortz – currently the crossword editor of The New York Times – to encourage international puzzling competition without any language barriers. The event is organized by the World Puzzle Federation, an association of countries (one organization per country) that "provides means for an international exchange of puzzle ideas, stimulates innovation in the field of puzzles, and fosters friendships among puzzle enthusiasts worldwide".
In second place – in terms of the number of gold medals won in individual competition – is the USA's Wei-Hwa Huang with four wins (1995, 1997-1999).
