When the original game in the Soul series – Soul Edge (Namco, 1995) – was ported to the PlayStation on 20 December 1996, an RPG-style story mode called Edge Master was added to the mix. It told the stories of the 10 main fighters through pages of text and missions that forced players to fight under certain conditions. Each time you won one of these fights, you were awarded with a new weapon that changed the fighting capabilities of your character. This was the first time that multiple weapon options featured in a fighting game.
