When Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition (Capcom, 2011) launched alongside the Nintendo 3DS on 26 February 2011, it became the first fighting game to use stereoscopic 3D. This technology enabled the fireball wars and super combos to come to life with added depth. The ill-fated Virtual Boy tried something similar with Teleroboxer (Nintendo, 1995), but this was a first-person boxing game rather than a true fighting game.

The first videogame of any genre to feature stereoscopic 3D was SubRoc-3D (Sega, 1982).
